Newly diagnosed

I've recently been diagnosed with Osteopenia and I was in shock. Boniva and terrible side effects - is this normal???

My mom has been diagnosed with low bone density and was prescribed Boniva  1 dose per month. She was sick in bed for 4 DAYS!!!  She was very fluish and had terrible joint pain - and she is not a complainer.   She is afraid to take this again...now what can she do?  Is this normal?
