Hi Marian, welcome...Your vitamin D score means you are insufficient in D.  Having a D deficiency (actually insufficiency in your case) can cause osteoporosis/osteopenia and some other health problems.  Here's an article on vitamin D that I wrote to give you more info.

You'll want to increase your score, so talk to your physician to see how much he/she thinks you should take a day.  Some Dr.'s recommend a prescribed therapeutic dose, but that would be up to the Dr.  If this happens, they will give you a script for a high dose of D2 for several months or so, depending on how fast your score goes up.  They'll be rechecking your D blood level to find this out.  If you're told to get an over-the-counter vitamin D, D3 is best.

Most U.S. labs say that any score below 30 is deficient, but many of the vitamin D experts believe it should be changed and raised so that normal is between 50-80 ng/mL.  So check with your Dr. to see what they think about the normal range also.  If you want to read more about D here's a good site on it called the Vitamin D Council.org.

Good luck with this, and keep in mind that your D score does not go up over night, so give it time to get back to the normal range.
