Hi Janet, Thanks for the question.  Vitamin D3 is necessary for  absorbtion of calcium, which is why calcium supplements also contain D and yes if your dr. advises it you should take it.  This link (written by Pam, a very smart lady) will tell yoiu about D3, what it does, how much is needed and why you should take it. HI Janet, hope you had a nice 4th. I don't think age has anything to do wtih the dose, unless you have other health factors tham may come into play. 1000 mg a day is reccomeneded, but i've read that number may be a bit on the low side.  You could ask your dr. what he thinks is the best amount for you to take.  have a good day..take care...phyllis
