Any surgery/medicine for severe osteoporosis

My Mother is almost 80 and has severe osteoporosis.  The Drs considered putting a steel rod in her back but her spoine was to degenerated for that.  Is there anything that can at least ease her pain?  She is currently using a walker but with much pain and just will not give up and go to the wheel chair except for shopping or such.  Any ideas will help.

thank you

Thank you for sharing your important questions with us -- your mother is fortunate to have you helping her out in so many ways! There indeed may be treatments available for this situation, but they may depend on your mother's other health issues whether she would be a candidate for this course of action. Specifically, treatments such as vertebroplasty (which uses cement to fix vertebral fractures) and kyphoplasty (similar, but also using a balloon to try to put the bones back in place) can be beneficial for some patients, but these are operations that require anesthesia.

You may be interested to note there are clinical trials underway for a new type of spinal implant that preserves more flexibility than the rods, and that may be used in those individual with more bone loss than existing treatments (because adding bone cement can be a component of the procedure). Again, this is surgery that requires anesthesia and is not yet available to the general public, but you can learn more about it at http://www.archususa.com/product-info.html

Lastly, some specialists have found that the bone-building effects of Forteo can help relieve osteoporosis back pain, but this medication, taken by daily injection, is certainly not for everyone. There are many conditions that can keep patients from being candidates for the drug (read about some at www.forteo.com). You and your mother may want to have a frank discussion with her doctor as to whether such a treatment, or any other, might be beneficial in her case.

Best wishes to you both!
