Q: Thoughts on Reclast Infusion

I am 51 y/o female with almost every wammy against me for Osteoperosis.  I am small framed, have Rheumatoid Arthritis which limits my exercise, I take Prednisone, and thyroid medication.  I have Celiac.  Phew.

My Dexa scan was not good.  Osteopenia in my hip and back.

I tried Boniva and got worse.  My dr now wants me to try Reclast.  I've read some horror stories on side effects.

I'd like to hear from those of you who've had this infusion and how you did?  Any side effects?  Did it help you?  How long until your scans were better?

Thanks,

Julie

Hi Julie, welcome!  I'm not a real fan of Reclast, but that's "my opinion."  The most important thing is none of the drugs for osteoporosis will work if you celiac isn't under total control.  Also prednisone causes bone loss taken long-term (over 3 months/daily).  I realize you "need" this for the RA.  Talk to your doctor about your malabsorption problem (celia) and see what he/she says.  I do know that if you aren't absorbing things properly none of the drugs will work correctly.  However, if you can absorb, say calcium okay or vitamin D, figured out through a blood test for both, then you might be able to take one of the osteoporosis meds.

If you calcium level is low, have kidney problems or the malabsorption problems, then Reclast is contraindicated for you.  Reclast will lower your calcium levels, and won't absorb if your celiac isn't corrected.  Since you have to take pred long-term I would talk to your rheumy and see what you should take.

Hope this helps!  Good luck and talk to your doctor!

Thank you so much for your responce.

I see your point on the malabsorption issue. I have known that I am Celiac for over 10 yrs and try very hard to comply to a GF diet but my last endoscopy was not good either.  I'm not sure what I am doing wrong.

Prednisone was one of the only drugs that kept me upright before I found another medications for my RA that has helped me.  I am down to 3 mg and am trying to get off of it.  I also know that previous other drugs that I took in the past ie:Omeprasole for a stomach ulcer, also causes malabsorption issues.  I am off it now.

I am going to see a new Naturopath that specializes in Celiac.  I think that my Rhumy and most MD's do not look at the whole picture.  If so, they would have informed me like you did about how my malabsorption issue may inhibit these meds from working.  It makes sence.

Thanks again,

Julie

Hi Julie...when you see your naturopath, have him/her check your urinary calcium (24hr) & vit D & compare to your last results; if your score is improved on both you're absorbing those & your celiac "may" be under control.

Good luck
