Q: any natural remedy for osteoperosis?

Does anyone know of any natural remedy for osteoperosis? I have been on Fosamax, Boniva, Zometa, and now I am on Forteo. I have had problems with all of these drugs. I was on Zometa for a year and spent most of it in pain. A year later and I am still battling a problem in my head that will not go away. I will soon be coming off of the Forteo because of the cost. I found out that I will be paying out of pocket each month, (I am on medicare)over 800.00. I am on disability and I certainly can't afford this cost.

Hi Kathy:  Sorry you are having so much trouble with all these meds!!

There are different options for treating osteoporosis that are considered natural, but it also depends on what you consider natural.

Calcium and vitamin D are natural, but these two alone may not provide you with enough protection against bone loss and fractures.

Some people consider Fosteum a natural treatment, but you would have to ask your Dr. about it since it requires a prescription.  Here's a link on Fosteum if you aren't familiar with it.

If you've had any type of cancer Fosteum may not be for you, since it has soy in it, so make sure you check all ingredients on any of the meds before you decide, because you never know if something might not be for you.

There's also Strontium Citrate, which is an over-the-counter supplement, but I don't know of many Dr.'s that would recommend it.  However, these decisions have to be something you decide on, with the help of your physician, so you could ask about it.  A similar version of Strontium Citrate is used with success in Europe, but it's not available here in the US, plus it's actually Strontium Ranelate, not Strontium Citrate, so you would have to know if Ranelate is very different than Citrate.

Good luck...
