Forteo.SIde effect serious heartburn. Help!

Water Lady
09/07/09

I have been on Forteo for five days. The second day I started experiencing serious, painful heartburn. I am on Omeprazole;have also tried Zantac to relieve symptoms along with no caffeine, tomatoes, spicy foods, chocolate. Is there someone out there who has had success with alleviating the heartburn side effect? I am so wanting to continue this, but it is making a normal like difficult. Last night it woke me up at midnight and it took me til 4 to feel better. Not good. Thanks!

Hi Water Lady, welcome and thanks for sharing your question.  I took Forteo and didn't have these side effects, but was told by a Dr. and other patients that if they took the injection before bed it could cut down on stomach upset.

Check with your Dr. to see if this is ok, since the time of day you take it is up to you.  Do you also have the heartburn at night or only during the day?  I haven't heard of this particular problem, but those with loss of appetite solved this by taking the injection before bedtime.  It can also be used this way to avoid dizziness so if it happens (dizziness) you sleep through it.  But again check all this with your Dr. to be sure.  Warm milk before the injection may help if the Dr says you can take milk with your omeprazole and zantac.  Also are you eating before the injection.  Some find that they need to eat first before they inject the Forteo.  I had to to cut down on the dizziness which only happened several times in 2 years.  There's no specific time of day that you have to take the injection so try to work around the shot when the heartburn is at it lowest level.
