Q: compression fracture T 7

I have had osteoporosis for a long time.  Took fosamax for 8 yrs, never had a bone scan then they took a bone scan after I thought I had pulled a muscle working out.  It wasn't a pulled muscle but a compression francture.  They put me on Forteo and have been on it for 2 months.  I had the fracture the day after Thanksgiving at the gym.  This Friday I have to make up my mind if I want a Vertebroplasty.  Afraid of that as it seems if it can go wrong it just may.  I don't know how long a compression fracture takes to heal.  I have been wearing a brace since Jan 13th.  My doctor kept telling me I had a pulled muscle until I insisted on an Xray.  It is so hard to get any info.  You ask the questions but don't really get a lot of answers.  I just want to get back to the gym.  Forgot to mention I am 64 and broke my hip at 55 due to a fall.  Any opinions will help

Hi Sandra:  Sorry to hear about your osteoporosis and fracture.  Whenever we have to make a decision involving surgery we have to consider all the pros and cons, and then determine if it's right for you.  I've had many spinal frax's, but vertebroplasty and kyphoplasty weren't an available option then.  I'm curious, is your surgeon only offering vertebroplasty and not kyphoplasty?  There are risks with both procedures, but from what I read kyphoplasty *seems* to be the more popular of the two.  This doesn't mean that it is definitely a better procedure, because your outcome depends on many pre-existing problems.

I can't tell you how long a compression fracture takes to heal but you can get a ball part figure from this blog I wrote on these two surgical procedures, and the link above.

Do you have kyphosis at the fracture?  Meaning a rounding of the spine at the frax site?  If so, these procedures can help to re-establish the vertebral height, which is lost during the fracture, and also help to eliminate the forward curving, and possible loss of height.

In the end you'll have to do whatever is comfortable for you.  Read as much as you can on the 2 procedures and see if any of the info helps.

Forteo is often used to speed the healing of fractures so hopefully it will help you in that respect.  I took Forteo and did really well on it, and haven't had any frax's since.

Good luck deciding what to do, and sorry I can't give you a definitive answer, only you can do that, along with your Dr.'s help.
