Hi janet, even if you have osteoarthritis and a herniated disc you can still improve your bone density.  You'd need to be careful with some exercises and I would ask your Dr. for a script to see a physical therapist that could guide you on exercises that are safe for bone loss.  Be sure you do your homework and pick a physical therapist that has knowledge in this field.  Some have knowledge and some don't.

As far as loosing weight, you'd need to discuss this with your Dr.  Loosing weight will help to lessen the stress on your joints, but you need a Dr. to guide you in this.  Weight in itself doesn't have a lot to do with bone loss.  People who are thin tend to have more bone loss than those who weight more, but this is not a predictor of bone loss.

You need to get the correct amount of calcium, vitamin D, vitamin K, phosphorus and weight bearing exercise to strengthen your bones.  Have your Dr. formulate a vitamin routine with exercise and you can discuss weight loss.

Good luck...

Hi Janet, I forgot to mention that you would also need a PT that has plenty of experience with osteoarthritis and herniated discs, since your exercise routine would "have" to be geared around these two things so you don't do anything that could make either of these worse.

As long as you have excellent help (physical therapist) get the recommended supplements and exercise geared to your particular problems, you should certainly be able to improve your bone density. If at some point you need to consider something more than supplements, exercise and diet, be sure to get as much info as you can on the risk vs. benefit on all the osteo meds.

Also discuss the weight issue with your Dr. since loosing some weight (determined by your doc) will certainly help the herniated disc problem and the arthritis.  The more weight you carry the more work your spine, disc's and joints have to do, so loosing some weight should help in many ways i.e. pain, mobility, prevention of further injury, and less stress on all your joints etc.

Good luck again... If you have another question don't hesitate to ask-that's what we're here forSmile
