Do you have any side effects, and how does the generic version compare with Foxamax? Did anyone have increased bone density after using the drug?

Hi Sallye, welcome... I've never used Fosamax (alendronate), so hopefully some of our members will add their experience. The generic version should be the same as the brand name. Some generics have additives that aren't in the brand name, but they are considered inactive ingredients.
How are your t-scores? Since there has been a lot of press on Fosamax and the other bisphosphonates (Actonel, Boniva, and Reclast) be sure that you're someone who would qualify for this. What I mean, is that most doctors don't like to prescribe this for osteopenia (low bone mass) and reserve it for post-menopausal women with osteoporosis and/or fractures. Osteoporosis is any score below -2.5.
If you have another question just post again. Good luck...
Hi Sallye, good luck and I hope some of our members jump in here. Do you know what type of differences others have noticed between the brand name and the generic? I'd like to know since I haven't heard this yet.
Just be sure to read as much as you can on this drug so you can be sure that your mom and you make the correct decision. Even with all the news on subtrochanteric femur fractures, the doctors are still saying that this drug is recommended for some people. When asked what some people means they say anyone with a t-score below of -2.5 or lower, a previous fracture of the hip or spine, and then to limit the drug treatment to 5 years. Since the drug has a long half-life, it will stay in your mom's system for some time after discontinuing it, if she decides to take it.
Here's a video on this med from Dr. Susan Ott from the Univ of WA on Fosamax and the other bisphosphonates. You can also read more at Dr. Ott's website on all aspects of these medications; also check the homepage, this is a very good site on osteoporosis with tons of info on all the drugs. Good luck to you both.

This is for my 82-year old mother who has just been put on Alendronate. In reading a lot on the internet, that many people have noticed a difference between the namebrand prescription and the generic version. I have read about so many adverse side effects, so I am wanting more input if available. Thank you, and I hope to hear from others and what their experience has been.
