I was diagnosed with osteoporosis 7 years ago. I have successfully tolerated Fosamax, and am now
considered as osteopenic. I would love to try the generic version, but am hesitant because of the possibility of inferior effectiveness.
Is it worth a try? I only get bone density tests every three years. I am 59 years old.
Hi Barbara,
Thank you for your question. Generic medications go through rigorous testing before they are approved by the FDA. The generic manufacturer must prove that their product is equivalent to the brand name product. The active ingredients are exactly the same - the only difference is the inactive ingredients (the brand company may use lactose and the generic company may use maltose). I wouldn't be concerned about switching from brand to generic. The only time I would recommend a brand over a generic is if you're allergic to one of the inactive ingredients, such as a particuar dye or something like that.
Best of luck,
Casey
