Q: Have you heard of any severe reactions on Actionel 150?

I took Actionel 150 almost 2 weeks ago and developed flu like symptoms, severe heartburn, and ended up in the Er since my mouth was burned, throat, etc.  I also had a rash a and a small amount of bleeding through my navel.  The doctor said I should not take any of these drugs....

Hi fluffy111,

Thank you for your question! Flu-like symptoms and heartburn symptoms are actually common reactions to Actonel (at any dose). The heartburn symptoms can potentially be reduced by carefully following the instructions on how to take the medication (take with a full glass of water, take 30-60 minutes before the first meal of the day, remain in a sitting or standing position for 60-90 minutes after taking). However, the rash and bleeding indicates a more severe reaction, possibly an allergy to the medication. Your doctor has warned you not to take Actonel or similar medications (Fosamax, Boniva, etc) because there is a chance that you are allergic to all medications in this class, and you don't want to experience this again. I'm sorry to hear about what happened to you, but glad that everything turned out okay! Be sure to tell doctors, pharmacies, and hospitals in the future that you had a severe reaction (and don't be afraid to tell them what happened) to this type of medication in the past so you can safeguard yourself against another incident.

Best of luck!

Casey
