Q: Forteo and SLEEPLESSNESS!

On Forteo, I initially (first week) had a few side effects like a racing heart feeling, lightheadedness, but believed those would lessen with time.  They did lessen for the most part.  I had no problem giving myself the injection (surprising).  I noticed waking up several times in the night but ignored it and usually could go back to sleep. Then my husband and I took a week's vacation and I was AWAKE (wide awake) ALL night and that has never happened before (normally I sleep thru the night)!  I didn't relate it to Forteo but to being in a hotel bed (which seemed comfortable).  We couldn't go sightseeing the next day, as I was so exhausted from not sleeping.  Then it occurred to me that I should perhaps not take the Forteo while on vacation and ceased my injection the 2nd night.  I slept a bit better the next night, and yet better the next.  I was finally able to go sightseeing after that. I waited to come home again to take the Forteo again...and you can probably guess that I was sleepless even in my own bed at home after taking the Forteo.  I've tried morning injections and injections about 5 hours before bed.  This complete sleeplessness occurred 10 weeks after beginning treatment.  I have an appt. with my doctor in 2 weeks days for followup, but in the meantime, I have not taken the Forteo.  I had been on both Fosomax and Actonel prior and after many years on Actonel, I had SEVERE joint/muscle pain (agony), so I hoped for a new solution to help my osteoporosis that does not have MAJOR side effects.  Reclast was one other drug my doctor had suggested...  those side effects worried me as to cancer, as I have a family history of cancer.  I'm beginning to fear that these cures are worse than the disease....   HELP!

Hi Andrea, welcome and I'm so sorry you are having this trouble with Forteo.  Have you tried taking it "right" before bedtime?  I've talked to some that did this since you can take Forteo at any time of the day/night.  They gave the injection just as they were going to bed and it seemed to relieve this problem.

You could try that and see what happens.  Speak with your Dr. and see if he/she has any other suggestions.

I took Forteo for 2 years and never had this problem.  I did have slight heart palpitations a couple of times and then it went away, but I have a mitral prolapse and have had palps, off and on, for years (starting in my 20's) so I never attributed it to the Forteo.  I also did really well on Forteo, and now I'm on Evista.  I went from severe osteoporosis to mild osteopenia in less than 2 years.

Good luck with your Dr. and let us know if you get this resolved.
