Hi batlombardi:  Vitamin D3 is recommended by most Drs and the National Osteoporosis Foundation.  When you take vitamin D you can choose between D2 or D3, you wouldn't take both, and D3 is the recommended form of D to take for good health and osteoporosis among other things.   Since your Dr recommended vitamin D, but didn't tell you which one to choose, then I would just go ahead and take 1,000 IU's of D3.  Here's a link from the NOF (National Osteoporsis Foundation) on daily vitamin D3 requirements.   Good luck and if you have any more questions don't hesitate to repost.
