Q: Is there more to excessively high HDL and osteoporosis?

I've found some research on very high HDL and a correlation to osteoporosis.  My HDL is 154....no joke.  It's been steadily climbing.  Now I have severe osteoporosis at age 49.  I'm in great health otherwise.  No underlying causes and no family history.  The only abnormal thing on all my tests is the excessively high HDL.  Does anyone else have this?  Does anyone know anything about this correlation?  I'm not sure of HDL functions in the body other than stripping away the LDL, but could it be doing something to my bones?

Hi Jo, welcome... You certainly are on to something here!  You're right there is a correlation between high HDL and bone loss.  From what I've read they haven't figured out exactly why it's connected, but it seems to be.  Maybe you could find our more for us and educate us all.

Have you discussed this with your Dr.?  Here's an article on this from the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.  Since we don't know the link yet, it will be interesting to find out what causes this.  Thanks for letting us know, I had no idea.

Good luck and let us know what you find out.
