Q: I have been taking Fosomax for approsimately 15. When I had my last physical, the Dr said that I don't need to be taking Fosomax any more. Is that correct?

Hi Judy, welcome!  Did you mean you've taken Fosamax for 15 years?  If so, I would imagine your Dr. has a good reason to tell you this.  Have your t-scores improved over this time? 

 

Long-term use of bisphosphonates may cause atypical femur fractures, in some patients, and the following warning was issued by the FDA below.

 

The FDA released information on long-term use of bisphosphonates in October 2010, saying "Consider periodic reevaluation of the need for continued bisphosphonate therapy, particularly in patients who have been treated for over 5 years."   Bisphosphonates include: Fosamax, Boniva, Reclast, and Actonel.  See the link above for the full warning explanation.
