Q: What is a trade name for a drug?

Is the "trade" name for a certain medicine the same as the "brand" name? For example I was told that Tylenol was the "trade" name for Acetaminophen? I am trying to find out the trade names for Compazine, Atenolol, and Actos for a school assignment.

Thank you

Yes, a "trade" name of a certain drug or medicine is the same as a "brand" name. The example you used is a good one -- Tylenol is a brand name for the generic over-the-counter (OTC) drug acetaminophen. Other common OTC examples include:

-- Advil and Motrin are brand names for the generic drug ibuprofen.

-- Aleve is a brand name for the generic drug naproxen.

To answer your specific (prescription) drug-name questions:

-- Compazine is a brand name for the generic drug prochlorperazine.

-- Tenormin is a brand name for the generic drug atenolol.

-- Actos is a brand name for the generic drug pioglitazone.

Best of luck with your school assignment.   - MG
