Don't let RA limit your routineLearn more now about a treatment that may help
Tuesday, October 21, 2008 Karen asks

Q: My 84 year old Mother hurt her back while attempting to help my Father off the floor a year and ago.

She was in bed for two months and still has a consideral amount of pain.  She had an exray at the time that showed no fracture.  She has hot flashes and has even passed out from the pain and stress of it all.  The Doctors just say she has osteoporosis and want to put her on Boniva. But it just seems like it must be more than that.  Would aCT scan show her problem?  I've also read alot of horror stories from ladies that have gone on Boniva, Fosamax and the like and they have alot of side effects.

I feel so bad for her and need to help her feel better.  Can you help?

Thank you

Karen

Hi Karen:  I'm sorry to hear your mom is having so much trouble.  Since your mom still continues to have pain even though she doesn't have a fracture, then something else is causing the pain.  Since I'm not a Dr. I can't say if a CT scan would be recommended, but it can give you more information about what the possible cause is for her pain since CT scans look at more things within the body.

Check her insurance and see if it covers CT scans and if the Dr would order it.  If you are worried that she has a fracture and the x-ray didn't show it, then having a CT scan *may* be an option.  Usually frax's show up on x-rays, but there are always exceptions to that.

I understand your reluctance with Boniva, but I think finding out about the cause of the pain should be established first.  If she wants to take Boniva, she can but you need a better diagnosis first, in addition to the osteoporosis.

Good Luck
