Q: adverse effect

Dear Healthcentral,

I have been taken alendronat 70mg once a week for 10 weeks now, and my joints, sinews and muscles are sort of aching. specially my hands, the finger joints, it  feels like they are inflamed. Will the pain decrease after some time ? Or how long time should I give my body to get used to the drug, before I ask my doctor to find some other treatment for me?

Yours sincerely

Thanks so much for your excellent question! According to the Fosamax website (www.fosamax.com), you should contact your doctor "if you develop severe bone, joint, and/or muscle pain at any time." It seems this would also be true if you are taking generic alendronate. Your physician may be able to recommend an alternative medication. There may be no need to continue in pain, so do get in touch with a medical professional as soon as possible. Best wishes!
