Q: Baby after Forteo?

In 2008, I took Forteo for 11 months.  Now I would like to have another child.  What are the risks to the baby, given that I have taken Forteo?

Hi PostForteo...welcome and thanks for your question. Forteo has a very short half life, which is the reason we need to inject it once daily. Also, once you stop taking it, your t-scores may decline for this reason, because it doesn't remain in the body. There haven't been any studies done on pregnancy after Forteo, but it's not recommended during pregnancy since we don't know what the effects would be.

Since you are asking how it would affect you after you've completed it, I would talk to the doctor who prescribed it and ask this question, or your OB/GYN either doctor should know the answer. Below is an explanation of the elimination process of Forteo, and its short half life found in Eli Lily's prescribing information (PI).

"Teriparatide is absorbed after subcutaneous injection; the absolute bioavailability is approximately 95% based on pooled data from 20-, 40-, and 80- mcg doses. The rates of absorption and elimination are rapid. The peptide reaches peak serum concentrations about 30 minutes after subcutaneous injection of a 20-mcg dose and declines to non-quantifiable concentrations within 3 hours (Eli Lily prescribing information )." This can be found on page 9 of the PI.

Good luck!! I hope there is no reason why you can't have children after taking Forteo, but only your doctor would be able to confirm this.

Hi you're a very welcome, and I hope there are no reasons why you can't proceed with a pregnancy once you discuss this with your Dr.
