Don't let RA limit your routineLearn more now about a treatment that may help
Sunday, April 27, 2008 Amy asks

Q: Just diagnosed with Osteoperosis, only 44. Reclast was highly recommended by the Bone scan tech.

Although I haven't consulted my physician yet, I am in the red zone of -2.7 for my back bone and -2.0 for my hip bones.  Is Reclast the right direction to go for immediate and aggressive treatment?

Thanks Amy Hermance

Thanks so much for sharing your excellent question. I am sorry to hear you have osteoporosis, but it is great to hear you are taking a proactive approach and considering treatment measures. Your inclination is absolutely right to discuss your condition with your doctor -- although the bone scan tech is trying to be helpful, this person probably doesn't have the expertise of an MD regarding the potential risks and benefits of prescription medication for osteoporosis. There are a number of medications available, but not everyone is a candidate for Reclast or bisphosphonate medication. While Reclast -- a once-yearly infusion of zoledronic acid -- can be of great help to some individuals in treating osteoporosis, it is best to determine with your physician exactly which course of action would be best in your case. Take good care and keep us posted!

I have just been diagnosed with Osteoperosis ( 44 yrs ) - My Dr wants to put me on HRT - but I have no other menopause symptoms yet even though my hormones indicate I am in early menopause - is this advisable? - I am keen to seek alternative - homeopathic medication  - is there anythingn available that is proven to work?

Hi deb, welcome...HRT is used by some to prevent and treat bone loss (osteoporosis/osteopenia).  I can't say whether it's avisable or not, because it depends on your medical history and if you have any reason why you shouldn't take estrogen, due to possible heart, clotting problems or previous estrogen positive cancers.

There are two options for treatment that are considered homeopathic, but again, it would be up to you and your Dr.  One treatment, which isn't FDA approved, is strontium citrate which is available over the counter which you could read about.  There's also Fosteum, which contains vitamin D3, soy isoflavones, and genistein.  Here's an article on Fosteum, if you'd like to read more.  I also included an interview on strontium citrate which you could read, from one of our members, so it's a personal account not a medical study.

Good luck with your decision and I hope you find something that works.

Thanks for the info am going to look at the alternatives - before trying HRT - my Dr still says HRT my best option - as am healthy and youngish ( 44 ) - no history of heart disease or cancer - but I still prefer the more natural approach! How long should I try doing it naturally before my next bone scan?
