Don't let RA limit your routineLearn more now about a treatment that may help
Sunday, December 21, 2008 Susan asks

Q: Is it OK to have my teeth cleaned while on Boniva IV?

I have just had my first quarterly infusion. In order to keep my gums healthy, I need to have my teeth cleaned every three months due to previous gum disease. I have read that it is dangerous to have significant dental work done while taking Boniva.

Is teeth cleaning in that catagory?

Second question is why is dental work dangerous while taking this drug?

Thanks - your answer to my previous question about the pain I was having after the infusion pain was what I had hoped for.

Hi Susan:  Your welcome on the other question, glad I could help.

You don't need to worry about having your teeth cleaned while on Boniva.  To double check ask your dentist about this to confirm.

You need to be careful with dental extractions or dental surgery where the soft tissue is injured due to surgical incisions.  In a small number of people taking bisphosphonates, an infection may occur which develops into the bone.  The risk of this happening is very small, but if you are concerned and thinking about having a tooth pulled discuss it with your oral surgeon.

You want to maintain a healthy mouth, so cleaning is important.

Good luck...
