Q: My T-Score keeps getting worse - Medication doesn't seem to help. Any suggestions?

Hi,   I have been on Fosamax, Actonal, Aclast for the last 10 years - my T-Score started out 10 years ago at -2.3 and now I am -3.15. Nothing seems to be helping...Any suggestions?  I have just turned 52 and hate to think what the next ten years will do.

Hi Geri, welcome...  Sorry to hear your treatment options haven't improved your t-scores!  Have you been tested for secondary disorders that cause bone loss.  When we don't see improvements from our treatment, it may be that we have something else causing it other than the normal risk factors.  There are also medications that cause bone loss so check this list to see if you are taking any of these and what you might be able to do to modify treatment.  Don't forget to have your calcium and vitamin D levels checked as well.

 

Talk to your Dr. about being tested for some of the medical disorders above.  If you have any of these, and they are going untreated, treatment of these may raise your scores.

 

Read the link above and see if any of these medical problems or medications apply to you.  Let us know what you find out, if you have the time.

Hi,

My doctor had me do a lot of blood tests, calcium, vitamin D, mag, etc.  Said the numbers came back all okay. She checked my thyroid as well.  I am going to bring your list to her of secondary diseases to see what she thinks. She did tell me I have slight Scoliosis in my lower back.  Because my Scoliosis in my lower back is slight - would that affect my osteoporosis?  I take 1500 mg of calcium and 1000 Vitamin D a day.

Sorry for the delay...Scoliosis does not cause osteoporosis, but kyphosis (curvature of the thoracic spine--near the shoulder blades-- is called dowagers hump) is a symptom of osteoporosis/compression fractures.  So the answer is no, but I would check with your Dr. to be sure.  Your calcium and D sounds great, and I hope you are able to do some weight-bearing exercises with the scoliosis.
