What careers are available for men with Kyphosis
My son suffered with cancer at the age of 6, Rhabdomyosarcoma of the liver. His treatments included chemotherapy and Radiation. About 2 years after the end of the treatments, he began to develope Kyphosis. We did take him to an Orthopedic surgeon who suggested ,that if not painful, to leave it alone. Now, at the age of 23, he is having difficulty in finding employment that is not hurting his back. Other than becoming a doctor, lawyer (which takes a lot funds)etc. what would good career choices be for him? At this time, what kind of surgery or treatment is there to get him to work at what he enjoys(Carpentry, framing etc)?
Hi Belinda: Good question. Have you looked into vocational rehab? Since I don't know what type of insurance he has it's hard to say where you would look for this, but if he is considered disabled, there are vocational rehab facilities in all states that will train people to do a job suited to their disability. I would start by asking his Dr what types of jobs would be good for him that wouldn't make his kyphosis worse. Check your local county, state, and federal programs on vocational rehab. Most of these programs are free provided you fit the requirements of each one individually.
Good Luck...
