Q: taking Actonel need to have several teeth extracted

I have read that you can have problems with gums healing if on the medication and should not be on it until after surgery. Since I have been on Actonel for more than 5 years, I wondered how long I should stop taking it before I have the surgery.

Hi denieruth, welcome...I would speak to your oral surgeon or dentist and ask about a blood test that will tell them if you can have this surgery.  The amount of time you "might" need to stop the medication depends on the results of this test.  Here's a link that explains this.  The test is called a CTx (C terminal-telopeptide) blood test.  Before having any oral surgery after taking bisphosphonates (Actonel, Boniva, Fosamax and Reclast) you should have this blood test first.

Here's the link from Osseo News on this test (be sure to read the whole page).  This site is a dental web site discussing these issues.  Have a conversation about this test and see if you can't get a result of >150 pg/ml before proceeding with the extraction or implant surgery.  Once you have this test, the surgeon should be able to determine how long you need to go off of Actonel.

If you have another question, just post again.  Good luck with your dental surgery.
