Q: Will calcitonin stop the pain of compression fractures of the vertebras

I have sharp pains across the upper back and across the lower lumbar area.  The pain medicine prescribed contained codine that

made me vomit and cause nausea.  I requested a medication that would ease the pain.  I am 90 years old and the doctor provided

this hormone medication to slow osteoporosis rather than ease my pain.  I'm taking Actonel, I don't know if the doctor looked to see what

medication I'm taking. X-rays indicated compression fractures in

vertabras of the spine.

Hi Anne Segal, welcome to the community.  Yes Calcitonin is often given to reduce the pain of fractures.  I hope it helps your pain!!  Have you noticed any relief yet?

Sorry to hear about your fractures and I hope they heal soon.

Let us know how you do on the Calcitonin,

Hi Anne, I just wanted to mention that both the Calcitonin and Actonel will help to slow your bone loss.  Calcitonin is normally used for an osteoporosis treatment, but it's also used to reduce the pain of fractures as well.  I would really be interested on how the Calcitonin works for you pain-wise.  I considered taking that for fracture pain, but my insurance wouldn't pay for that plus my osteo treatment that I was taking at the time.

Good luck...Smile
