Q: conflicting results from bone density test

Last week I had a bone density test. I only have them every two years as that is what medicare funds.  I had been taking biophosinates for for 7 years until about a year and a half ago when I became aware that the jaw pain that I was experiencing may have been caused by them.  I stopped the pills and no more jaw pain.

I was concerned about the bone density test as I had stopped taking the pills and my mother had very serious osteoporosis - I fit the profile.  The results of the test confuse me as some of my bones have lost density and others have increased in density.  For example one of my hips lost 9% in density but the other one gained 11% in density.  Why these results?

Hi Sandylee, welcome and thanks for your question.  This is not unusual, I know many that have had this experience.  If you want to read more about discordance in repeat t-scores see the Univ of WA bone physiology site .  There are many different medical disorders that could cause this, but I don't know if they apply to you.  Just one example would be if you had arthritis in one hip and not the other since this can effect your score.  Check the list of things that can cause this at the site above and see if this helps any. I hope your next DXA is great, and am glad you no longer have the side effects from taking a bisphosphonate.

Good luck and if your doctor gives you an explanation for the difference between your 2 hip scores, please do let us know, if you don't mind.

Take Care...
