Q: How does the absorption rate of the generic fosamax compare with the original fosamax?

Name brand Fosamax is difficult for the body to absorb - hence the waiting 30 minutes to an hour before food, drink, etc. are taken - to improve its absorption. Is the generic fosamax equal?

Hi Bonna,

Thank you for your question. As you mentioned, Fosamax is difficult for the body to absorb. The active ingredient just isn't absorbed well by the body. The generic is going to have the same precautions associated with it (Take first thing in the morning on an empty stomach - Drink with a full glass of water - Don't lie down for 30 minutes afterwards). That being said, the FDA has strict guidelines that the manufacturer must meet to prove that the generic is equivalent to the brand name formulation. The main difference between brand and generic medications is the inactive ingredients that are used. You can read more about the brand/generic rules here at the FDA website for the Office of Generic Drugs. I hope this helps!

Best of luck,

Casey
