my dentist won't pull my teeth now that I'm on forteo.
Hi Sophia, welcome and thanks for your question. I don't understand why your dentist won't pull your teeth while on Forteo. Forteo is not a bisphosphonate and does not cause jaw problems. When I had some teeth pulled and was on Forteo, my oral surgeon said that was the best medication to be on since it stimulates new bone growth if they have to cut into the bone during the extraction.
There is an article on this from a medical journal that I unfortunately don't have. But you could ask your Dr. to look for it to see if this helps in any way. It was in the Journal of Maxiall Facial Oral Surgery from April 2008, I'll have to do some checking to see if I can find the title of it.
Ask the dentist to do some reading on this, and see what he/she comes up with.
Good luck and if I can find the article I'll repost it. I'll do my best but it may be hard to find.

Good luck and let us know what your oral surgeon or dentist feels about this article, since only they can proceed with this *if* they agree.
I hope this helps...
I spoke with my dentist when I wasn't on Forteo or bisphosphonates and he said anyone on bisphosphonates he would not treat because the risk is too great of jaw necrosis. I think your dentist is confused about what type of medication Forteo is and that it's not a bisphosphonate. Pam has a good suggestion is to have your dentist read the article.
My dentist did say that he attend continuing education and that the issue of bisphosphonates and dental care has been on of the topics extensively discussed with dentists. I hope your dentist is keeping up with current research and treatment.

Hi again, this article isn't available free of charge but I have the corrected info on it. Most oral surgeons subscribe to this so if he/she has some older issues available in their library here's the info on it:
In: Journal Oral Maxillofacial Surgery 2007, March
65 (3) pages: 573-80 pubmed id 17307613 "Resolution... of the mandible: possible application for intermittent low-dose parathyroid hormone [rhPTH(1-34)]. authors: [Harper, RP and Fung, E]" From: University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center.
Hope this helps. You could possibly get this from a University Library in the Medical Journal section. They'll usually let you make copies of the article if you can't check it out.
