Q: Are there any new medicine treatments for osteoporosis?

I was just diagnosed with osteoporosis in Dec 08 with a high risk for fracture.  I am researching the different medicines and have not read about anything I would want to take.  Do you know anything about Strontium Citrate (synthetic Strontium Ranelate, in Canada Strontium Support, Protelos)?  I know it has not been approved in the US yet, but why not?

Hi pam:  I'm not aware of any new drugs for osteoporosis, that have been approved.  There is a drug that may get FDA approval that is different than the bisphosphonates (fosamax et al) Forteo and HRT or SERMS, that's called Denosumab. Here's a link from Dr. Gonter here at the osteoporosisconnection explaining it.  The only problem is Denosumab hasn't been approved yet, but maybe soon.

I believe the FDA is looking into Strontium Malonate, since Strontium Ranelate isn't available in the US.  There's also the over-the-counter version of Strontium Citrate, which some say works, but I have no experience with it.  If your interested in the Strontiums, look up Strontium Malonate to get the latest info on it.

Have you read about Fosteum?  If not here's a link on it, and it's uses for osteoporosis and osteopenia.

Good luck with your treatment, I hope you find something that is right for you.

In addition to meds, research the following:

#1 stress on bones builds bone - weight bearing exercise!

#2  Get your blood tested for vitamin D  (it should be well over 30 ng/ug)

#3  Get you blood tested for Osteocalcin.  High levels of uncarboxylated osteocalcin will tell you if you have optimal levels of vitamin K.
