I am 4 years into menopause and diagnosed over 2 years ago with severe osteoporosis of spine. I am
56. My doctor has tested for parathyroid, vitamin D deficiency and several other causes. Found to have trouble absorbing Vitamin D so take 50,000 IU capsule 1x/week plus Fosamax and calcium supplments. 1 year late osteoporosis is worse. Am also anemic and seeing hematologist. No cause for anemia found after number tests. Any ideas on cause of such severe osteoporosis? My spine numbers are worse than 80 year-old mother-in-law who smoked for 50+ years and no exercise in life. I'm seeing specialist at Barnes Hospital, St. Louis next month. Could this be a hormonal problem?
I can tell you what my surgeon told me. He said my primary care physician was very remiss in NOT seeking agressive treatment for me immediately. I too was diagnosed at a "young" age. Not treating well cost me a fracture and surgery just 18 months later. The surgeon told me to get to an endo and get agressive treatment. He said to have a bone scan again in a year and if one drug doesn't work, try another, and if that endo doesn't want to change it, find another doc! He was very proactive in taking control of your own treatment and do what's best for you. If my pcp had done so, I might not be facing surgery on Monday!
