Q: Is Sally Fields right on Boniva???

Just found out I have high cholesterol and beginning medication for that - at the same time, discovered some osteoporosis thru a bone scan (had no clue), was told to take calcium citrate twice a day AND start Boniva. After reading that Boniva can make cholesterol level higher, wondering it is wise to start Boniva or forego ... guess I am also wondering if the calcium citrate does enough, do i need the Boniva too? Should I take the calcium citrate a few months and have another bone scan to see? The Boniva side effects really concern me. 61 years old - ha - felt fine 'til they told me I was falling apart!!! <g>

Hi, welcome...So sorry to hear about your high cholesterol and osteoporosis.  When trying to decide which medication is right for you, read all you can about it, and see if you have any of the contraindications for it.  Only you can decide this, with the help of your Dr.  Here's a list of Boniva's contraindications and side effects.  To search for a specific topic, like side effects, put those words into the pdf's search box, from the link above, and it will take you to the page and paragraph on that topic.  Are you thinking about the oral monthly Boniva, or the quarterly injection?  The links here, are for the monthly oral.

Here's a link to the web site for Boniva.

Be sure to discuss this thoroughly with your physician and be prepared for the visit with a list of questions to help with this decision.  Once you've covered all that concerns you, then you can make an informed decision.

Unfortunately, on one can make this decision for you.  Good luck with all this and let us know how it goes.
