Q: can you tell me something about what is going on with my kidney creatitine? went to get reclast

infusion and the blood work showed my creatitine to be 1.5 and blood calcium to be 11.2. ( my creatitine had been 1.16 for several months after chemo.but my calcium had been ok.   my oncologist had ordered reclast for me ( I take arimidex 1mg daily) after breast cancer surgery and chemo from summer of 08)  I had been trying fosamax, actonel and boniva for the last year trying to find one i could tolerate, i hurt with them all.  that's why doctor wanted me to try reclast.      the techincian said i could not take reclast now, to come back in 2 weeks and meantime drink a lot of water and stop calcium supplements.  can you please address the creatitine issue and do you know if my levels remain stable  should i take reclast?

Hi Helen, welcome to the community.  You are very lucky that you had an infusion center or Dr. that checked your calcium and creatinine levels before this infusion.  Your creatinine is too low to receive Reclast and your calcium is high.  Do you have a Dr. that can look into both of these?

According to the manufacturer of Reclast (Novartis 2009), "Disturbances of mineral metabolism must be treated before starting therapy.  ...Reclast is not recommended for use in patients with severe renal impairment (creatinine clearance <35 mL/min). Monitor serum creatinine before each dose."

Please follow the instructions and drink plenty of water.  Really try to get your 8 glasses of water a day.  This will help a lot and will keep your body hydrated and improve you kidney output.  If you do get the infusion, at some point, continue with drinking the recommended amounts of water 64 oz a day forever.

Good luck...
