Can you take Fosamax ( any dosage) safely after 10 years?
Hi Mary, welcome... It is possible to take Fosamax for ten years without any problems. It sounds like you may be one of those people. These drugs react differently with "all" of us, so some may not be able to take it that long. If you are worried about these atypical femoral fractures that have been on the news, discuss this with your Dr. and have a conversation about a drug holiday. The current thinking is to take these meds for 5 years and then take a break from it. Since the half-life is long with Fosamax, stopping it, if you do, should not cause any immediate problems since the drug is still in your body.
Unfortunately we don't know who will have problems with these meds, and that is something to consider.
Good luck and read as much as you can and talk to your Dr. Here is a recent study on Fosamax from the New England Journal of Medicine if you'd like to read it. It gives the statistics on these femur fractures and analyses several studies and their results from Fosamax.
