Q: Using osteoporosis drugs primarily for soft jaw bones

My friend is 63, takes impecable care of her teeth, sees the dentist every 4 months. Now she has discovered "soft jaw bones" and must have some teeth replaced with implants. Her bone density tests are always good. How much credence should be placed in the bone density tests, and would one of the osteoporosis drugs be appropriate for her?

Hi candi, welcome to the community.  Jaw bone loss is a normal occurence for most, regardless of how well you take care of your teeth.  Most people she this as they age.

I've never heard of taking an osteoporosis medication for this.  Usually a Dr won't rx an osteo med unless you have low t-scores that show osteopenia or osteoporosis.

I would have your friend talk to both her Dr. and Dentist to see if this is something that's used for jaw bone loss.  Usually they just have you start deep cleaning (scaling) several times a year and watch the bone loss, but maybe they are doing something new for bone loss in this area.

Good luck...
