Osteopenia is the start of losing bone mass.  You were described Boniva to keep you where you are.  Once you get osteopinia, the doctors can't tell you if you will go down or not or even a time limit of it.  But the doctor is doing all he knows to do to hopefully stablize you  in a safe place.  Osteopenia is still the weakening of bones but it is a step above Osteoporosis.  You are very lucky to be there at such an age, good girl!  The Boniva is not overkill at all.  It's a prevention.  And it's to help you from getting fractures.  But remember, it's not a cure just yet.  You do not want to go any further down.  Do all you can to stay where you are.  Get on a good calicum with vitamin D.  Don't take a chance on getting fractures at age 86.
