Don't let RA limit your routineLearn more now about a treatment that may help

Q: What are some treatment options for osteoporosis for someone who also has a hiatal hernia?

My mom has severe osteoporosis, but her doctors aren't treating her for it because she also has a hiatal hernia.  They attempted surgery to fix the hiatal hernia, but it didn't take.  Are there any treatment options out there for the osteoporosis?  It is severe enough that she's constantly fracturing her ribs and her vertebrae are collapsing.

Hi JennH, welcome to the community and thanks for your sharing your question with us.

Phyllis has given you some excellent info on Strontium Citrate, so I hope that is something your mothers' Dr. will consider.  Most Drs aren't aware of Strontium Citrate, and that's probably because it's a supplement and doesn't have FDA approval.  That doesn't mean it's not a good choice, it can be, but if your moms' Dr isn't familiar with it or won't recommend it, you might ask about Forteo.  Your mom needs to make the ultimate decision, with the help of her Dr.

Forteo is used for those with previous fractures and low t-scores because it works well on frax's and builds new bone quite fast.  Like any option, this might not be something she would want to try, but it's best to know all the choices so she can make an informed decision.  I took Forteo (after 6 frax's) and did really well on it going from severe/established osteoporosis to osteopenia.  Since Forteo doesn't go through the gi tract, it wouldn't affect her hiatal hernia like the bisphosphonates could.  If she has any non-healing frax's here's an article on how Forteo works and why this is a good medication for this type of fracture and osteoporosis in general.

Here's an article on Forteo from the Cleveland Clinic you may like to read.  If you have any questions about this option just re-post with the reply button or post a new question.

Good luck finding something that will work for your mom, and I hope they can find a treatment that will halt all these fractures.

Hello JennH..welcome to the community.  Sorry to hear that your Mom is having so much trouble. You're right to look for something that won't cause more problems or give new ones with side effects. One you might want to look into is strontium citrate, i've been taking it for almost 3 years now and have had no side effects at all.  It's a natural supplement that can be ordered online and if your lucky in some stores. There are plenty of sites that will give you info, but this one covers it all pretty well.

This  link will provide info about the prescription from of strontium citrate..Protelos, which is used in Europe and many other countries to treat osteo.  The article gives a very informative look at strontium, but here in the States we take 680 mg. a day in capsule form, not  a powder mixed with water. It covers everything from what it does, how it does it and  side effect to look for.

Hope this info will help you and your mom find a solution to her osteo.  If you ahve more questions please ask...we'll do our best to help.  take care...phyllis
