Q: what about current information that says all of these drugs cause bones to bed brittle and stops new bone formation?

Hi Carol, welcome... Yes the bisphosphonates "can" cause some brittle bone.  To read more about this, see this article on femur fractures after long-term bisphosphonate use.  Also, read the FDA warning on long-term use of bisphosphonates.

 

The other drugs used for osteoporosis like:

 1.  Forteo

 2.  Calcitonin

 3.  HRT

 4.  Evista

 5.  Fosteum

 6.  Strontium Ranelate

 

Should not cause this effect.  If you are taking one of the bisphosphonate (Actonel, Boniva, Reclast, Fosamax etc.) discuss a drug holiday with your Dr. after or possibly before 5 years of use.
