What is the procedure of taking Forteo on airlines and through security?
This is a great question and I will share with you my own personal advice -- based on how I transport my son's EpiPen. I place it by itself in a 1-quart bag, and the baggie alone in the bin, so it can easily be viewed, identified and X-rayed. I also carry the prescription with me just in case, although I've never been asked for it.
In the case of Forteo, remember that the drug needs to be kept refrigerated, which could be a problem on a longer flight. A potential solution would be to bring a small cooler (soft-sided would be the most practical) and ask for ice at a restaurant past the security lines. But talk to your physician about what the best plan might be.
If you want the official word from TSA, take a look at http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtravel/specialneeds/editorial_1059.shtm
Unfortunately, everyone has heard horror stories of unstudied officials violating their own policies and taking away cancer medications or other crucial items, but let's hope those aberrations are problems of the past. Good luck and safe travels.

No problem at all. I put the pen, needles and ice packs in the black package and send it through Security. I went to China and spent 3 weeks there. No questions at all.

Hi Karen: If you have your Forteo id card you can log into the Forteo website and get a list of things you should know about traveling with Forteo. The password is on the front of your card, but is the same for all, so if you can't find the card let me know and I'll give you the password.
Bring a copy of the rx label for the pen with you and a letter from your Dr explaining why you need to travel with it. Make sure it is hand checked; don't let it go through the x-ray, because this can damage or negatively affect the way the pen works. If you got the Lily travel bag with your first pen, it will also explain how long the pen can be stored in that particular bag. Keep the needles in a seperate container or bag within the travel bag. Never leave a needle on the pen during storage, because the pen could leak, plus it's not a safe thing to do, since you never reuse a needle anyway.
Below is the explanation from Lily on how to safely travel with your pen. I've never taken it on a plane, but know many who have, with no problem. I think the major concern is keeping the bag at the proper temp 36-46 F, so what I did was put a thermometer in my bag and run a test on the bag. If you try this test, see how long the gel packs stay at that temp. I tried it in a hot car, and also in my kitchen, and my experience was that the gel packs I have last longer than what Lily claims, so just check it out. You've probably already traveled with the bag/pen by now, but you can use this info below for future trips. Also some people like to take a duplicate of their original prescription with them as well.
Good Luck and let us know how you did at security and with the gel packs temp. You have to log into the Forteo patient site before you can get to the link below.
