Q: Taking Forteo for a year, and bone density was no better....

I am 54 and have severe osteoporosis of the spine & hip.  I took Fosamax for 6 years, and have just completed my 1st year on Forteo.  I just had a bone density test today, and my scores were no better...  In fact, my spine was a little worse than it was before I started the Forteo.  Has anyone had this result?  Is it possible that my scores will get better after another year on Forteo?  My dr. has suggested maybe taking Evista along with the Forteo....

The real question is: Why do you have severe osteoporosis at the age of 54? Maybe you have Osteogenesis Imperfecta?

The fact that your osteoporosis is getting worse despite the use of bone medications like Fosamax and Forteo should raise the alarm bells. Osteoporosis unreponsive to treatment means that: 1)your doctor should look for secondary causes of osteoporosis if not already done 2) you should see a bone mineral disease specialist.

Don't just keep throwing medications at a problem that has not been clearly defined.
