I want to know how safe these versions are. Are any manufactured in China or other third world countries where there would be a risk of contamination?

Hi MLT: Here's what the FDA's "Office of Generic Drugs" say's about the strict guidelines and approval process a generic drug must meet before it's available to the public.
"Health professionals and consumers can be assured that FDA approved generic drugs have met the same rigid standards as the innovator drug. To gain FDA approval, a generic drug must:
For more info on alendronate sodium (aka Fosamax) see the link above. You can also search through the link for info on ingredients (active/inactive) using the active ingredient name (alendronate sodium) or the brand name. I believe the last bulleted point answers your question about possible inactive ingredients.
Hope this helps...
Hi MLT: I forgot to mention that Teva and Barr Pharmaceuticals are the companies making this generic version, and from what I can tell they are both US based co's. To be sure about the inactive ingredients you could ask your pharmacist if they know or have a list of what's included in the medication. I would be surprised if a contaminate could be in any of these drugs, but it's better to be safe than sorry, so I would ask for a complete list of ingredients which you may be able to get from the link at the FDA or your pharmacist.
I know I always worry about the generics, but my concern is usually whether or not there is some inactive ingredient in it that I'm allergic to, which can happen, but it can also happen with the brand names as well. You always have to be diligent to check on things that you might be allergic to.
If you are going to take it, I hope all goes well, and feel there shouldn't be any problems.
