Is there any research that compares the effectiveness of Reclast and Forteo?
Is there any research that compares the effectiveness of Reclast and Forteo?
Hi Jana NP, welcome and thanks for your question. I haven't run across any head to head studies on Forteo and Reclast. As you probably know, Forteo is a daily injection of man made parathyroid hormone given for 2 years. Reclast is a annual infusion, and it's a bisphosphonate, a class of osteoporosis meds like Actonel, Boniva and Fosamax.
If you are considering both, do as much reading as you can so you can take that knowledge to the Dr. and ask some good questions. Some people have trouble getting Forteo, since it's really expensive, but you may have insurance that covers it--look into that and the Reclast.
Here's an article from the Cleveland Clinic that explains Forteo, and another article on Reclast that explains it and who should or shouldn't take it. The Reclast article has the research data, links to the drug co's web site if you want to look up coverage, side effects, and infusion centers near you.
Good luck with your research and I hope you decide which med is best for you!
