Q: are calcium chewables with vitamin d and k ok for bone density

my mother was bedridden with osteoporosis and my bone density test showed loss in both hips, and i cannot tolerate the pills, so would i benifit from the chewables. my mother said she did not eat much or drink milk when she was carrying me, and she worried that i would have problems one day. i have broken my ankle and arm before, i am 68 years old. any advice would be appreciated.

Hi Joanne:  So sorry to hear about both you and your mother!  Yes chewable calcium with vitamin D and K is ok to take if you can't tolerate the other types of tablets.

 

Just make sure to get the recommended amount, which is 1200 mgs of calcium, for those over 50, and 1,000 IU's of D.  With that said, you still should check with your Dr to confirm these amounts since it's possible he or she might want to prescribe someother amount.

 

Calcium also comes in liquid form, if you are interested in that.  Your body can only assimilate 500 mgs of calcium per serving so break up your dose into that amount several times a day until you equal the daily requirment.  You also are probably getting some calcium from your diet, so add that up as well.
