Q: Afraid to take Evista

I was taking Fosomax for almost 10 years with no problem. My new Dr wants me to take Evista, but I am afraid of getting blood clots. I also am not happy with getting more hot flashes. Is there any other safer medication I can take?

Hi Roxanne, welcome... I take Evista, and it hasn't made my hot flashes any worse.  Some people experience this side effect and some don't.  You do have to be careful with the possible side effect of blood clots, but if you decide to take Evista be sure to get exercise.  Do you have a history of blood clots, if so here are some other meds to consider:

1. Calcitonin (nasal spray or injection)

2. HRT if you don't have any contraindications for this, like previous cancers, heart problems, or strokes.

3. Prolia (new twice yearly injection for bone loss, but it's only recommended for those at high-risk for fracture.

4. Fosteum

5. Strontium Ranelate if you live in the European Union.  This drug is not approved in the U.S.

6. Strontium Citrate over the counter mineral.  This is not FDA approved and most doctors don't recommend it but you could look into it.  UC Davis is currently studying its benefits/risks but the study isn't completed yet.

7. Calcium, vitamin D and exercise which is something you should do anyway regardless of what you take.  You should get other bone supplements like, magnesium, phosphorus, folic acid, vitamin K, B, A, C and most of this can be found in a multiple vitamin.

See the two links above on Prolia and Fosteum for further info.

Good luck with your decision.

Thank you. I appreciate your help. It gives me something to think about. My both parents died from blood clots to the heart. My father was 73 and my mom was 83. I dont know if this puts me at high risk for clots, because of their ages. But you can understand my concern.

Hi Roxanne, Yes I can sure understand your reluctance about taking a medication that "could" cause blood clots.  Since you have first generation relatives that had this problem, you may want to look into it yourself to see if this will pose a problem for you.  Be sure to read as much as you can on all options since there are some other meds that could cause blood clots, like HRT and possibly Strontium Citrate.

Good luck finding something that YOU can take.
