Q: Osteoporosis treatment, ref. humerus fracture

Dear Ladies/Sirs,

My wife fractured her right hand humerus at surgen's neck & have been operated - implant fixed, 11.02.2009.

Control X-ray & scan shows that still calcification NOT finished, bone porousness (osteoporosis) found and one or more screws loose.

Two different steps recommended:

1. New operation - removal of implant & !?

2. Osteoporosis treatment with medicament (Laclasta/aclasta !? -trade name) infusion;

My wife - Tijana Savic: born 14.03.1949 ( 60+), blonde, tiny & ~160 cm h.

Please let me have your oppinion / advise.

If necessary, I could send (in digital form) X-ray & scanned pic. (taken 04.01.2010).

Sincerely yours,

Hi Srboljub Savic, welcome to the community. Unfortunately we don't have a doctor that can answer your questions, but I have a couple of ideas that may be of help.

Are you saying that the doctors want to choose between one of the two options, or are they considering both? If you wives humerus repair was not successful, I would think that her doctors would have to consider repairing/replacing any hardware (screws/pins) that have failed. I don't know what the plan is, but generally when this happens a repair with replacement hardware is "one" consideration.

Secondly if your wife has osteoporosis, determined by feeling the bone, then I would think the second step would be to treat that as well. Aclasta is the trade name for zolendronic acid which is given yearly as an infusion for osteoporosis. I'm not a health professional but have had experience with both of these situations and in my case both problems had to be treated separately to get the fracture to heal.

Ask your doctor if that is the plan and go from there. It will take some time for the surgery to heal. Good luck and if you have another question just post again.

Hi Josi, welcome to the community.  Here's a link to the manufacturers website where they list the side effects of Reclast.  The ingredients are:  "Reclast Injection is available as a sterile solution in bottles for intravenous infusion. One bottle with 100 mL solution contains 5.330 mg of zoledronic acid monohydrate, equivalent to 5 mg zoledronic acid on an anhydrous basis."

"Inactive Ingredients: 4950 mg of mannitol, USP; and 30 mg of sodium citrate, USP. (Novaritis, Prescribing Info 2009)"

The side effects are: "fever, flu-like symptoms, myalgia, arthralgia, and headache. (Novartis 2009 PI)."

No there aren't any blood by products in Reclast.

Good Luck....
