Q: What are the recommended exercises to increase bone mass in the spine?

My doctor precribed Boniva after test results showed moderate to severe osteoporosis in my spine. I am 54, and want to try to stave off future deterioration.

Blood tests will determine if there is any other health condition that attributed to this unexpected finding.

You ask an excellent question. Unfortunately, sometimes even those individuals who live health lifestyles and avoid osteoporosis risk factors can unexpectedly lose bone mass, especially during menopause. Weightearing exercise can help prevent further bone loss from becoming as severe as it might be otherwise, but you must take special care not to attempt any activity that could result in a fracture. Check with your doctor to see if exercise such as walks, Tai Chi, or carefull use of a balance ball might be suitable. (Definitely avoid anything that could cause a fall, or requires you to bend or twist your back.) Good luck and hope this helps!
