My mother has been with Forteo for 4 months, which is the best way to test the effectiveness of Forteo because she needs to have back surgery but the surgery depends if her osteoporosis has improved.

Hi ximena: When I was taking Forteo, I would have a test done between dxa's to see if the forteo was working. If your mother can't have a dxa, then you could ask about having a bone marker test.
This test is a simple blood or urine test done to measure collagen in the urine or blood. There are other markers that can be tested, but I'm only familiar with the 24 hour urine NTx (aka n-telopeptide). Here are two links that explain this test. Dr. Gonter on bone markers, and Pam Flores on bone markers.
I hope they find out that she's doing well and building new bone from this test.
Good luck to you both...
