Is a "bone scan" the right procedure to determine what is wrong with my knee?

Topics:DXA & DEXA Scans

I am 36 years old mother of 3 young children. I started having knee pain for no apparent reason. My Orthopedic Doctor could not see anything wrong in my Xrays, he ordered  blood work and a "Bone Scan", also to calm the pain he gave me a shot directly on the knee which it worked for a little time but still have some pain specially during the night time. At this point I am not sure if a " Bone Scan " is the answer to find out what is wrong with it?

Hi G Taylor, welcome and thanks for your question.  A bone scan is a good test to determine what might be wrong with your knee, but it's not generally used for osteoporosis.  A DXA scan is used to measure your bone density to determine if you have osteoporosis, but what you are experiencing doesn't sound like it's related to bone loss.

If you need info on osteoporosis or DXA scans post again.

Good luck...
