Q: Dangers of leg bones (femurs) breaking after taking Fosamax for several years.

I was told that the taking of Fosamax resulted in some women's legs fracturing or breaking without cause, i.e. they didn't fall nor where they hit.  Just walking along and a break occurred.  Is this a possible side effect of taking Fosamax?

Hi Norma, welcome...Yes it is possible to have one of these fractures from taking one of the bisphosphonates (Boniva, Actonel, Fosamax, Reclast etc.)  If you'd like to read more about this phenomenum, here's a link to a question of the week on spontaneous fractures and Fosamax.  We know that this does not happen to all taking these medications, but it does happen to some.  If you'd like to read more about ABC news report and several medical associations that are studying this, here's another answer to this question with links to several excellent studies on fragility fractures.

Good luck, and try to educate yourself as much as possible on these types of fractures.
