Q: Osteopenia

FrownHi Pam, Do you think Calcichew-D3 Forte tablets are sufficient in aiding Osteopenia? 1250mg and10 micrograms vitaminD? I was taking calcium phusphate, but, find these easier to take. My endracoligist suggested powdered drinks which were awful! Also, do you think general dieting and excercise will help rid this weight I've gained from HRT, its so frustrating because I really watch what I eat and excercise?

Hi Feldema:  Thanks for your question.  Do you have a dxa scan coming up, or do you have to wait for insurance reasons?  I ask because if you were to have another scan soon, you could find out if your scores have improved on just the supplements alone.  You're taking the recommended amounts on the supplements and exercising so that should help, but it's impossible to say if those things alone will drastically improve your scores.  These things are very important and will help, but I don't think anyone could say how much help it will provide since we are all so different and react at different rates to these things.  Just check your next dxa and see how you are doing.  If your scores don't go up a lot, you *may* want to consider adding another treatment.  See Phyllis' posts on Strontium Citrate, you may like to read about that, she has more than this one, so look for them.

If you've stopped the HRT, you *might* see a slight decline in bone density, since the hormones help build bone, but you also might be one of those that doesn't react that fast either and your scores could be better or the same.

General dieting and exercise sounds like a suitable way to loose some weight, but again if you've stopped the HRT, it may just come off anyway from stopping it.

Good luck and I hope your dxa scores improve.

Hi fidelma, welcome to the community. There are many different kinds of calcium that are availablem each one has it good and bad points.  The trick is finding the one that agrees with how your body works and one you'll remember to take each day.  The chews you mentioned provide a good amount of calcium and D, but its good to get some of your daily calcium from food also.  Does your diet also include low fat dairy, dark green leafy veggies, beans and other calcium rich foods, as well as fruits, whole grains and lean protein? There are so many calcium fortified foods now that its easy to get your calcium from food. A good healthy diet will help lose weight and exercise will help even more.  The trick, as you know, is to eat less and move more to lose weight.  This is easier said than done but with dilligence and effort you can get the results you're looking for.  Dont forget to splurge once in a while..a treat now and then makes sticking to a healthy plan easier.  Does your exercise program include both weight bearing and weight training? The more muscle you have the more calories you'll burn during the day. If there is anything else we can help with just ask...take care..phyllis

Hi Fidelma and Phyllis:  I agree whole heartedly with Phyllis.  She has given you excellent advice, so this should help a lot.  I included one of her posts not realizing she was answering you at the same time I was so you can read about this other supplement Strontium Citrate which she knows a lot about.  If you have any questions about this supplement, I'm sure Phyllis would be happy to help you.

Good luck againSmile
